Hiking can be an extremely difficult physical activity at times which is why it is important to properly warm up and stretch for your hike. You are taking several risks by not warming up properly for a long day of hiking. By not warming up and stretching properly you run the risk of pulling a muscle or getting a permanent muscle injury or tear. You also run the risk of accidentally slipping on a rock because your muscle suddenly tightened up. One of the most painful risks that you run by not stretching is getting a cramp mid way through your hike. Getting a cramp could take you out for the rest of the day or even leave you stranded in the middle of the trail.

First, you should just jog back and forth slowly for about two or three minutes. This will help to loosen up the muscles in your legs and get your heart rate up. This is your way of letting your body know that it is time to work hard. After that you are going to need to stretch every muscle group in your body. There are different stretches for each muscle group in the body. One of the most important muscles to stretch is the hamstring muscle.

To stretch the hamstring muscle you should put both of your feet together and try to touch your toes without bending your legs. You should hold this position for ten seconds or until you feel like you have adequately stretched the muscle group. The next stretch will help you stretch all of the muscles in your legs. For this stretch you should spread your feet apart as wide as you can while standing up. After that, you should try and touch the ground with the palm of your hands. The stretch then continues by trying to touch your right foot and then your left foot. This is the best stretch you can do for stretching muscles in your legs. Let’s take a look at some of the different ways you can warm up for a hike:

 Stretching your hamstring muscles by trying to touch your toes
 Stretching your leg muscles by doing a split
 Jogging for a few minutes to get the heart rate up

If you use these warm up techniques you will significantly reduce your chances of getting a serious injury during your hike. No matter how good or how ready you feel you should still warm up before going on a hike. The best hikers in the world warm up like this so you should too!
