If two teens wanted to hitchhike or take trains and buses across two provinces to visit some family, any tips on living on the road/street? Making money? Lifestyle in general? Basically just backpacking within the country and making money without legal working permit. Street stuff.

pack a knife, conceal it and have it ready for quick draw…if you cannot get a revolver, get a knife…have a plan if someone tries to ambush you….i’m paranoid man i dont know where you from but your bound to run into some trouble.

Write out a good will and leave it with a relative. With the number of kids who go missing doing the same thing, its wise to let people know where you want your estate to go to.

Aside from don’t do it in the first place, stick together at all times, stay clean and sober at all times, have a cell phone, stay in hostels if possible, and you’ll have a hard time finding work for cash in places you’re not familiar with. Panhandling will probably work as well as anything else to get money. Save a bit of money up instead and plan to take the bus instead of hitchhiking, stay with family if that’s who you’re visiting or look for hostels ahead of time and have a list of addresses, get rides from family and their friends. It will be much safer and you’ll have just as much fun.

Unless they’re provinces like PEI, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick or Newfoundland, I’d stay away from “backpacking” as the size of provinces are huge with sparse development in areas along with generally poor transportation links.

Backpacking in a certain area, like a string of BC mountain towns, maybe, but to span entire provinces would prove challenging. We’re not Europe.
