I have been considering backpacking this summer as a graduation gift from my parents. Right now it looks like its going to be me and my best friend. Does anyone have any tips?
Most youth hostels are great, which sadly is reflected in their prices. make sure you get central ones….. the one in Berlin I stayed at was rather far by bus, and closed early:((
Munich/Berlin are interesting( big), Hamburg a must (take some time), Aachen a college city of medium format but with a visit to Lindt choclates:))) very well worth it (and someone might speak english)
as a german myself…. ok…… most people are not so nice
Stick to places with universities for easier communication, if female dont look foreign men in the face (its like hello big fella…how are youuuu) not always what you want
trains are dear but theres no real choice(24h tickets let you use the slower ones at good rates), unless you have enough german to navigate Mitfahrgelegenheit sites where you can book ride alongs

Germany is a super cool country, as much basic german as you can learn will serve you very well but don’t despair if you don’t know much or any at all as almost everyone speaks very good basic english at least. look up “davids cozy little backpacker hostel ” for a super nice(and really cheap) hostel if your round berlin. and for a super cheap way to get around hitch hiking is an option, visit digihitch.com

its not as risky as traditionally believed, have a good read on digihitch and you would hav a better idea of whether or not its for you
