Backpacking Tips and More Backpacking Tips
Living and Working Anywherein the World you Want
Perhaps the number one rule of backpacking tips is to remember to pack as little as possible, as light as possible. You will avoid much muscle strain and back pain the more you keep this in mind. After much careful deliberation and determination, select only those things you think you must have and then cut it half. Then you will just have started the process of final selection. It is always recommended that you start by writing every thing you want on a list. Then you can add and delete as well. You might also consider assigning weight estimates to each item to keep track of the weight you are putting in your pack.
It’s important to note here- not to forget to factor in the weight of the pack itself into your estimates. Let common sense dictate the type of things you’ll need with you. For example you would not pack shorts and swimwear if you were traveling in the winter. Likewise you wouldn’t pack a warm coat if you were traveling in mid-summer. You should consider at least some light warm weather close along with your cooler items however, if you are traveling in the spring or fall. You could expect a wide range of temperatures in short time during these seasons. As is true for any travel out of doors- don’t forget to pack wet weather gear when traveling in any season.
Tips for light packing
Choose dark or natural colors to wear as they hide a lot of the dirt that gets on you when you are outdoors. Use only a few colors and they will be sure to match. Use layers of clothes for keeping warm in cooler weather. You can save space and keep clothes free from wrinkling by rolling them tightly into tubes.
Remember that the goal is to travel light. Do not pack things just because they may come in handy. If you are packing a guide book it is a good idea to cut the binding off so that the pages can be separated. This can be done at any copy shop like Kinko’s. Punch holes in only the pages you will use and consolidate space by using a binder.
If you have bought more than one guide book and want to save some space, get the bookbindings cut off (any copy shop–like Kinko’s–should be able to do this for you for a nominal price) and take out only the pages you think you will need. Hole-punch these pages and place them in a small three ring notebook or organizer. I ended up hole-punching the outside edges of my pages because they had more white space available for the holes. This meant the pages of my books were in reverse order (with last page of book first and first page of book last
